Hello I’m looking for some information on DJ Paul Child’s he was a DJ for WCHB Monday-Friday times 7pm-12am he also had a radio show called Apology Line I’m interested in the theme song for that show hopefully you can help me with that info.
It was Brenda and the Tabulations… Stay Together Young Lovers.
I’m so glad to know someone else remembers. Everyone I mention him to act as I f they never herd of him.
I was a very small child and I remember him. He was the orignator of the Apology line. I looked foward to listening altho I was a child. He called himself the Rapper Dapper or the Dapper Rapper.
I’ve been looking for information on him for years. I wonder what happened with him, where is he, what did he do after radio and is he still alive?
There was another song that was played on The Apology Line show as well. It was a man who sounded a lot like Isaac Hayes whi sang, “Baby…I’m Sorry.” It was played at the end of the show. Looking for the artist and name.
We who grew up in Detroit heard 1440 WCHB, Inkster, when Mary Wells, the Marvelletes, other Soul Artists in and outside of Motown dating back to 1962 approx. It was Black owned. (Check with the family of Butter ball, Jr. One of its Did. WCHD fm Detroit was the sister station. It became WJZz 105.9, later 106. WJLB was white owned but was predominantly run by African American s. You need to check the Detroit newspapers of the time.
The comment was misspelled. I named Butterball Jr. as a DJ i.e. disk jockey. I furher wrote WJZZ as the jazz station formerly named WCHD, under the ownership of Bell Broadcasting
Hello….two questions 1) was WCHB or its companion FM station WCHD partially destroyed in the ’67 riots and 2) did Dorothy Ashby have her radio show “The Lab” on WCHB or WCHD?…thank you!
WCHB was located at 32790 Henry Ruff Rd. in Inkster. It wasn’t destroyed in the 1967 riots. It operated out of a converted house in a very rural area of the city. I believe the house has since been demolished. WJZZ was located at 2994 E. Grand Blvd. and was also still operating in the mid-1970s. WJZZ’s headquarters was a little over two miles southeast of Clairmount and 12th Street, where the ’67 riots broke out, but I never heard any talk of either station having been partially destroyed during the 1967 riots. I did not know or hear of Dorothy Ashby and never heard of a radio show called The Lab.
I grew up in Westland Annapolis Park right off of Henry Ruff. We use to ride our bikes about a mile down that dirt road and sit with our transistor radios listening to the newest tunes. Sometimes th D J S would come out and speak to us kids…wonderful time then..””we grew up all Music lovers!
Harpist, Dorothy Ashby would have been in WCHD-FM. She may have had a part-time slot during that period. I worked there 4:00-8:00 as Tommy Smith 69-70. I left going to LA to replace Wolfman Jack on XPRS as J Thomas Smith.
There were 2 ladies, one very warm and sensual , who were DJs for WCHD.
They came on before the INCOMPARABLE , FABULOUS ED LOVE whose SHOW started at 2:20 pm Sundays.
Who was that sexy, seriously warm Lady who did her show before Mr. Love .The subtle flirting with Mr.Love…..pure Jazz ; Pure Ed Love and this BEAUTIFUL Lady.
WHO WAS THIS LADY DJ !!!???
It was not Rosetta Hines.
I am searching for Bill “Butter Ball” Crane (a former WVON-AM DJ). He did an interview on a talk show, I believe, last year. He was great DJ in his Chicago days. Is he still spinning records?
I am looking for two djays, Michael Feature and Spencer J. When did they come on and what time, I think Spencer J had the song People Get Ready There’s A Train A Coming
I’m looking for two historical newspaper articles from the Michigan Chronicle when WCHB first went on the air in 1956. One article is “New Radio Station Off to Impressive Start” (Nov 24, 1956 p1) and the other is “He’s A Real Pioneer” (Dec 15 1956 page A5). The Michigan Chronicle archives appear to be available only through Proquest (in Universities). Please let me know if you can help with these two articles. Thank you!
I’d love to see those also. I’m putting the final touches on my new book, “Black Radio: An American History” which is planned for release around Juneteenth on Amazon. WCHB was the first black-owned radio station building “built from the ground up.”
This Roland Bynum, I worked at WCHB 1966-67 primarily on the weekends. Also sat in for most of the jockd. Got hired by Jim Randolph KGFJ in 1967. A Great HISTORICAL station. It’s a shame the building dosen’t even exist today.

I would like to know if anyone knows the name of the ending song for Dj Paul Childs Apology Line?? I know the song for the opening and I Thank the person that helped with that song. Now lets see who knows the closing song. I really would appreciate the help that used to be a show but I listen to on the radio all the time the Apology Line. And it’s a shame that when you look his name up you really can’t find the information about him. But I do know that he has passed many years ago.
