Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a 2002 American documentary film directed by Paul Justman that recounts the story of The Funk Brothers, the uncredited and largely unheralded studio musicians who were the house band that Berry Gordy hand-picked in 1959.

The Funk Brothers recorded and performed on Motowns’ recordings from 1959 to 1972. The film was inspired by the 1989 book Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson, a bass guitar instruction book by Allan Slutsky, which features a biography of James Jamerson along with his bass lines.[2]

The film covers the Funk Brothers’ career via interviews with surviving band members, archival footage and still photos, dramatized re-enactments, and narration by actor Andre Braugher. The film also features new live performances of several Motown hit songs, with the Funk Brothers backing up Gerald Levert, Me’shell Ndegeocello, Joan Osborne, Ben Harper, Bootsy Collins, Chaka Khan, and Montell Jordan.

The impetus behind making the film was to bring these influential players out of anonymity. In addition to bassist James Jamerson, The Funk Brothers consisted of the following musicians: Jack Ashford (percussion); Bob Babbitt (bass); Joe Hunter (keyboards); Uriel Jones (drums); Joe Messina (guitar); Eddie Willis (guitar); Richard “Pistol” Allen (drums); Benny “Papa Zita” Benjamin (drums); Eddie “Bongo” Brown (percussion); Johnny Griffith (keyboards); Earl Van Dyke (keyboards); and Robert White (guitar).

The Funk Brothers produced more hits than The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys and Elvis Presley combined. It was their sound, according to Mary Wilson (of The Supremes), that backed The Temptations, The Supremes, The Miracles, the Four Tops, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Mary Wells, among other noteworthy bands during their tenure from 1959 to 1973.

The Undisputed Truth was an American Motown recording act, assembled by record producer Norman Whitfield as a means for being able to experiment with his psychedelic soul production techniques. Joe “Pep” Harris served as main lead singer, with Billie Rae Calvin and Brenda Joyce Evans on additional leads and background vocals.

They were introduced to Motown by singer Bobby Taylor, and, when The Delicates broke up in 1970, two of the members of that group, Billie Calvin and Brenda Evans began providing background vocals for artists around Motown.[1] They sang backing on the hits “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” for Diana Ross and “Still Water (Love)” for The Four Tops. Joe Harris had been part of a Detroit soul group called The Fabulous Peps.

Formed in 1962, the group were renowned for their energetic stage performances, and they cut a handful of singles for various different labels before their dissolution in 1968. Harris also became a member of The Ohio Untouchables (later The Ohio Players). In 1970, Motown producer Norman Whitfield – partly as a response to criticism from Temptations fans that he was using the group as his personal plaything – put together Joe Harris, Billie Calvin and Brenda Evans to create his own recording act, The Undisputed Truth.

The group’s music and unusual costuming (large Afros and white makeup) typified the then-popular trend of “psychedelic soul” which Whitfield had inaugurated. A number of their singles became minor hits, and many of them were also songs for Whitfield’s main act, The Temptations, among them 1971’s “You Make Your Own Heaven And Hell Right Here On Earth” and “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone“. Their single Top 40 hit in the United States was the ominous “Smiling Faces Sometimes,” originally recorded by The Temptations, which hit #3 on the US Pop Charts in mid-1971.

Although they could never recreate the success of “Smiling Faces” they continued to make chart appearances throughout the early 1970s. They found some success with songs like “What It Is” (1972) and “Law of the Land” (1973) becoming modest hits on the US R&B Charts.

Founding member Billie Calvin died on June 23, 2007, at the age of 58, in Mureitta, California, USA, of heart disease. Tyrone “Lil Ty” Barkley died on February 14, 2017, at the age of 70, in Arizona.

PAPA WAS A ROLLIN’ STONE

 

 

Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” is a song performed by Motown recording act The Undisputed Truth. It was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong in 1971, and released as a single in May 1972. It peaked at number 63 on the Pop Charts and number 24 on the R&B Charts. The song was included on the Undisputed Truth’s album Law of the Land (1973).

In 1972, Whitfield took “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” and remade it as a 12-minute track for the Temptations, included on their 1972 album All Directions. The shorter 7″ single release of this Temptations version was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and won three Grammy Awards in 1973.

While the original Undisputed Truth version of the song has been largely forgotten, the Temptations’ versions of the song have been enduring and influential soul classics.

The full-length album version was ranked number 169 on Rolling Stones list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, one of the group’s three songs on the list. In retrospect, the Temptations’ Otis Williams considers “Papa” to be the last real classic the group recorded (it would be the Temptations’ last number one hit and would win them their second and final Grammy Award in a competitive category).

Motown Records Expands Into Big Name Artists Repertoire; Finds UK Expansion Abroad

 

 

 


 

 

DETROIT — The Tamla-Motown organization recently reversed its general policy of creating its own big names and has been adding standard acts to its roster, including Billy Eckstine, Tony Martin and Connie Haines. Other big names – most of whom haven’t had hit records in some time – are expected to be added to the fold.

“One of the reasons these artists haven’t had hit product lately, “Vice-President and Sales Manager Barney Ales said, “is that they haven’t been recorded with an appeal to the record-buying public. We want to give them our sound.”

The “Detroit Sound” has been tremendously successful; the firm’s batting average is the envy of the record industry. As of this week, President Berry Gordy Jr. can point to 9 singles on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart (another just dropped off last week) and four of these were in the top 20. Two weeks ago, the firm had 12 singles on the chart. The label also now has seven LP’s in the top of the chart. “Where Did Our Love Go,” by the Supremes, has been on the LP chart 51 weeks.

What makes all of this fantastic, however, is that the firm released very few singles so far this year – only 32, according to Phil Jones, marketing and research director. “Five of these records were million-sellers,” he said. “Ninety per cent hit the charts.”

Five singles turned out by Gordy reached No. 1 on the Hot 100. These included three by the Supremes, one by the Four Tops and one by the Temptations. Jones said that “I Can’t Help Myself” by the Four Tops sold a million and a half records. “But we have 10 or 12 artists that constantly have hits,” Jones said. “I feel we’ve made more artists than any other label.”

It was felt that with the present splurge of signings, which included Jack Soo, the Lewis Sisters and Barbara McNair, the firm was branching into more album product. Jones said that Tamla-Motown first intended to give these new signings a hit single. “They seem to be able to sell albums better that way.

“We’ve been putting out a limited number of albums -12 or so this year. Out of that, 10 have been on the charts and seven are still on,” Jones said. “All of these albums have proper timing – the artists are hot. I don’t consider it any sense to turn out catalog product; it’s too difficult to compete with the budget lines.

“What we’re doing is signing people with talent that will fit in with material we’ve already got on hand. Our success can be attributed in part to the great producers we have working for us. For instance, the songwriting and producing team of Brian Holland, Eddie Holland and Lamont Dozier have turned out six or seven releases this year, of which four have reached the No. 1 position on the chart and two or three reached the top 10.”

Smokey Robinson, the lead singer with the Miracles, also writes and produces, and Jones said that product director (and Motown producer, songwriter) Mickey Stevenson “has also come up with quite a few hits.”

The label recently expanded overseas, and Jones and Ales left Sunday (Aug. 23) to meet with EMI officials in England to discuss establishing closer ties and more effective marketing for the label. “What we hope to do,” Jones said, “is make all of our artists as successful in England as the Supremes are there.” END
