    A FRIEND OF TOM SHANNON

  • Robert A. Howe says on: November 25, 2012 at 10:34 AM

When I was twelve and thirteen I spent every Friday at WEXL in Ferndale. I became friends with Dave Carr, John Ramsey (The Bearded One Loves You) Rick Devitt, Mike Jason, Don Kirk. I learned to run the board and loved practicing in the old board room in that great studio. I stay in touch with Dave Carr who lives in Northern Michigan after years of owning and operating his own radio station WKKM. My memories of those days and those guys have stayed with me for over forty years.

Hi Robert, thanks for your shared comments. WEXL was already a country legend when you frequented the station, as you described, back in those days. Thanks again for sharing with us your reflections here on Motor City Radio Flashbacks. And tell all your friends we are here!

I loved the airchecks. What great memories of what was once a great pace. The airchecks bring back the glory days of Detroit & Southeast Michigan. I grew up in Detroit on the westside (Joy Road & Linwood near Sacred Heart Seminary).

I turned 10 a few weeks after WKNR started, and listened to Gary Stevens everyday after school. I eventually ended up as an engineer at WXYZ-TV where I still work to this day. Would love to become a member of the site.

Our band The Ramada’s played many places with Jim Jeffries and Jerry Goodwin of WKNR - KEENER13. From ’65 thru ’67. Many great memories and good times :)

      Hi Ron!

WOW — maybe one day if you care to share any of your stories with us, we’d welcome that! We can transcribe your story (or stories) and we can post it on the site for all to see. Have any photographs from those events with the Keener guys? Please let us know….

Thanks Ron for dropping in our website. Hope you’re enjoyed spending some of your time here!

Trying to find out if you have any video of my two appearances on Swingin Time. The band was The Bottle Company. Had a record on Hideout Records, with Punch Andrews. It was summer of 67 or sometime in 68. Once with Robin Seymour and the other with Tom Shannon.

    How would I research this?
But WOW what a great site.

The radio was our constant companion when we were dating or just cruising with your friends from school. No better memories than a warm summer night with the windows rolled down and the radio turned up. A beautiful girl by your side and a full moon riseing over lake St. Clair.

The late Earle Dickinson on WWJ. He always used to read the Hottest and Coldest temperatures in the 48 contiguous United States. He’d also read the temperature at International Falls, MN in the winter (coldest) and in Death Valley, AZ in the summer (Hottest)

Ed Mckenzie was one of my personal favorites, the original Jack the Bellboy. Long before II ever watched Alan Freed, or Dick Clark I watched his ‘Saturday Dance Part’ being broadcast from WXYZ-TV, out of The Mcabees Building, on Woodward Avenue.

Worked with j Michael Wilson @kbtr in 65 I did the east of midnite shift from the crappy transmitter site then would head back to the main studio to take record and logs back. Many times I would til j mike ended his shift just to talk and watch him work, he was amazing and with Rodney the rodent, fantastic. I was sorry.to see him leave for Detroit, when he left and Tom Griffiths took over the 6-10am went south. Shows what true talent can do.

Lee Alan is still my favorite radio personality after all the years during the ’60s when I would listen to his show on my little transistor radio.

I clearly remember Mr. Alan doing a narration with some kids over Jackie DeShannon’s “What The Needs Now.”

I’ve been scouring the web for a copy of this great treatment of our life and times throughout the 1960s-’70s. Considering today’s current world events, I think Lee Alan’s adaptation just as revelant as it was then.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

I worked at WJZZ for many years as well as Smooth Jazz V 98.7. Lots of interesting things happen behind the scenes at radio stations. Here are a few…

Miles Davis was quite the grumpy one at a press conference. He liked to cuss people out!

George Benson said I could introduce him on stage at Pine Knob in Detroit right after the Stage Manager said I couldn’t. So I did!!! He’s my all time favorite!

Anita Baker doesn’t speak to most radio people. She was mean to everyone and avoided me like the plague!

Norman Brown is way cool. He taught himself to play guitar and has 9 children!

Grover Washington was a very kind and gentle man with a big heart!

Aretha Franklin is cool as ever.

Al Jarreau is very shy. Very, Very Shy.

Earl Klugh is an Awesome man.

    Stanley Clarke is the Best!

Kenny G copies his style from Ronnie Laws. (how did he get into Ronnie’s “closed” recording session?, through his good friend, the sound engineer. got his first break on an album by Kashif. The song is titled “Slip of the Tongue”.

I could go on but there isn’t enough room…lol enjoy these pics https://www.facebook.com/karla.fox1/photos

I was introduced to WJZZ jazz radio in the 1960’s, my friends and I used to be late for school because we were up all night listening to the radio, we didn’t play many records at the parties we had, we turned on “the Jazz show” , that’s what we called it. WJZZ became so much a part of our lives that we thought it would always be there, to find MCRFB is a real blessing to me, I hope that the format and Playlist will someday be available on CD

  • Benjamin T. Foxx says on: January 9, 2016 at 11:59 AM

WJZZ was always on in my house, we used it as our personel music supplier for any function, many of us were late for school because we were up listening to “the Jazz show”, I hope to find Periods of WJZZ on CD or MP3 some day. I grew up on WJZZ, nothing else played in our cars but “JZZ”, and if you didn’t have a car, our transport was the DSR, and nobody on the bus complained if somebody turned on the radio to WJZZ, Detroit was not the same to us without WJZZ, I really thank God for putting me in touch with MCRFB, please don’t go away, keep up the GOOD work, if not for nobody , but Me - :-)
