Dave McNea CHYR 710

*****

Dave McNea, 19 years old in 1975 (above), was the morning man at CHYR. He remained at the Leamington, Ontario radio station,  until October 1977.

Thereafter McNea left for CHTK in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, his tenure there, nearly 3 years. Next stop was a hop over to Venon, BC, on CKAL, a Country station 1050 on the AM dial. Having left radio 1987, Dave McNea’s final stop was at CKO-FM in Vancouver.

While CHYR was not a Detroit radiio by any means, Detroiters picked up it’s AM 710 signal from across the Detroit River clearly on the dial. Having said, we remember their CHEER radio ‘brand’ and its great Top 40 sound during the 1960s and 1970s.

This CHYR aircheck is the first of 5 Dave recently contributed to the website. And most appreciatively, it is our very first CHYR inclusion into the website’s archive.

A special THANK YOU to Dave McNea . . . more to come on Motor City Radio Flashbacks

  1. Mercifully the “reverb” on the air output was removed about a year later.
I always disliked it. It sounded so 50’s. Lou Tomasi loved it, but c’est la vie.
Ted Cribbie, Cheer Engineer, admitted the reverb unit died, as I recall. So it just “wasn’t repaired”.
It is such a treat to have my old airchecks included among all the radio luminaries on this site. Many of these other guys are the ones who inspired me.
Jim Feliciano deserves a ton of credit for his dedication to Detroit Radio and its fringe efforts. It was a market of SIXTY stations! The Big Eight, WJR and WWJ is why I wanted to get into this radio thing back in my very early teens at 13. Thanks Jim for a magnificent site and great memories!

  2. I was the Saturday receptionist in 1970 while I went to nursing school at the leamington hospital Monday to Friday. Lou and art were my boses lol
I enjoyed my time there. Got into trouble with a DJ there but can’t remember his name, maybe just as well. Live in Alberta now.
