JOHN F. KENNEDY: YEARS OF LIGHTNING, DAY OF DRUMS

___

New York Times Movie Review (above link) Aprill 11, 1966

This 1964 documentary, narrated by actor Gregory Peck, tells the story of President Kennedy’s 1000 days in office, while also showing scenes from his funeral. The film was created to air internationally only, but due to critical acclaim Congress passed a special resolution allowing it to be seen in the United States. The documentary was funded by the U.S. Information Agency and written and directed by Bruce Hershensohn.

Funded by HBO in partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performance Arts, the film was digitally restored in observance of the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s death, November 2013.

Available on DVD by Warner Brothers Home Entertainment. Released 2013.

ON THIS THANKSGIVING DAY: A ‘FOOD FOR THOUGHT’ . . . NOVEMBER 17, 1958

From the MCRFB NEWS archive: 1958

There’s “Food For Thought” In a Thanksgiving Day Visit to Your House of Worship

Old-congregational-church-in-fall-weather (MCRFB 2)T O D A Y ,  F A R   T O O   M A N Y  of us think of Thanksgiving in terms of food and football — overlooking the fact that there is so much more food offered than that which is placed on the family table. For there is much “food for thought” as well.

Thanksgiving is a time to take stock of life’s blessings . . . to take a bright-eyed child on your knee and talk to him, or her, of things that really matter. . . of their great American heritage and the promise it holds for them. It’s a time to take your whole family to your church or synagogue for an hour of prayer and thanks that will make your holiday mean so much more.

True, our lives are far removed from those of the Pilgrim Fathers. We live in the uncertainty of the Atomic Age. But we also live in the abundance of 20th Century America. Has any one of us so much or so little that he cannot find room or time in his heart to say thanks?

This Thanksgiving, why not take your family to your church or synagogue? Wherever you are . . . whatever your beliefs may be . . . take time to offer your word of thanks.

THE ABC RADIO NEWS * WXYZ (ABC affiliate) * FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1963

01:36 P.M., EST., FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1963

THE ABC RADIO NETWORK

___

At approximately 1:36 p.m., EST (12:36 p.m., CST; Dallas time), Don Gardiner of ABC News in New York first broke the airways nationwide with a FLASH news bulletin President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas, over the ABC Radio Network (WXYZ; Detroit).

Almost immediately following the ABC report, the CBS (WJR; Detroit) and NBC (WWJ; Detroit) radio networks broke in with bulletins approximately 1:38 p.m. EST. The Mutual Broadcasting System (WKNR; Detroit) began picking up the news feed pouring out of Dallas, breaking radio programming with flash bulletins covering Mutual affiliates nationwide, four-minutes later. Time approximately 1:40 p.m., Detroit time.

By 1:45 to 2:00 p.m., virtually every station on the dial (with the exception of WJLB who had not suspended their Friday scheduled programming) would cease all commercial radio programming in Detroit, and thereafter would remain under the news control of the three major networks out of New York during those four days, November 22-25, 1963.
