  1. Blessings upon Google!

From time to time I’d think of Mr. Love and this station. It was a staple in our post-high school crusingng days in Marshalltown, Iowa. As soon as it hit 6:00 PM or so, and I assume the power went up, CKLW and WLS in Chicago were the stations that we took with us in Mustangs, Baracudas Camaros or the family 4-door.
It was the last moments of American Innocents ended and the the Viet Nam war and grass changed everything. Especially the music. In those days, Iowa had only one FM station. It had no sponsors and played nothing but easy listening. Like all popular AM stations all over the US, the playlist included The Beatles, Stones, Dylan right along side the Beach Boys, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Frank Sinatra and lesser titles of schmaltz and bubble gum stuff. It was the common experience nation-wide that united the Baby Boom Generation, and with the passing of the AM station and the three TV networks, the nation has been less united as a result. Diversity plays to a specific instance, but only to its select audience. I’ve discovered The Shins (a bit belated ) lately and they’re a great band. What a difference if the reach of AM sent their music nationally the way AM did in those days.
