Does anyone know the history of the old Detroit Tiger theme song played from early 1960s into the ’70s on where it came from, title, composer, etc? Thank you
There’s an old Marathon radio commercial jingle I’d love to find but have been unable to. It aired during Tigers games in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s. I still remember how it goes.
“Gee it’s great to be back here again / at the ballpark in Detroit again / back where my heart has always been / with the Detroit Tigers playing baseball again”
I am also looking for the title of that opening and closing theme of the Tigers played by a concert band. No one seems to know. I have been on line looking and asking. I even suggested asking some of the old band directors of Michigan’s colleges and universities (many are probably dead, but many have retired and may still be around). When I was a substitute teacher, I heard the theme at the end of an assigned movie on Cuba that I was showing the students. This was in the early 1980s. I will continue to check with the Michigan Bandmasters’ Association (if there is one).
Here’s the origin of the Detroit Tigers march: it’s based on a bit of production music called the Bell Telephone March by Louis Francesco. Check out this webpage from the music publisher and give a listen to the original:
Chris Hobbs, “You the man!”. This mystery has been taunting Detroit baseball fans for decades. Back in the early ’90’s, I sent Ernie Harwell a note with a self-addressed postcard, asking about the Tiger radio march theme. He responded, but didn’t know. Ten years ago, I heard Howard Stitzel being asked the same question. Same response.
Tonight, I was looking for Detroit radio music surveys from 1959 and happened to glance at “Recent Comments”. The next thing I knew: “Wow!”. Kudos.
They were using that theme well into the 70s!
Until 1980 I believe. They should have never stopped
I remember hearing this theme through the 70’s…. It was looped a few times to give the voiceover time to name all the sponsors.
Wow!! Brings back a lot of good memeories from when I grew up in the 70″s!!
It’s a little hard to admit how that fanfare made me kind of teary …
