CKLW-AM 800 * 1974 * BROTHER BILL GABLE
Remembering Bill Gable
___
Late Tuesday evening, September 18, Motor City Radio Flashbacks received devastating word from CKLW alumni Charlie O’Brien, Bill Gable had passed away.
A legend and one of the most popular DJ in Detroit during the 1970s, Brother Bill (as he was known at CKLW) spanned 46 years in the radio business.
His resume in broadcasting comprised stops at WEAM (Washington); WHBQ (Memphis); CKLW (1972-1980); CFTR (Toronto); WLW (Cincinnati); WMAG (Greensboro); WOCL (Orlando); WMMO (Orlando) and CHFI (Toronto) in 2002.
Bill Gable retired from Toronto’s 740-AM Zoomer Radio in April 2014.
Bill Gable will be remembered by his radio peers who knew him best — a kind and gentle man, a legendary voice, a Detroit radio great.

I had the honor and pleasure of working with Bill at WOCL in Orlando. Words cannot express the love we had for this kind and gentle man. I never saw him angry. After leaving WOCL, he went on to do mornings at Orlando’s WMMO. One morning, he played the entire ABBEY ROAD album. After he got home, I called and asked how he got away with doing that, He told me, “Jack, the PD came in, said there was a bomb scare and to vacate the building. I put on the longest CD I could find and vacated rather quickly!” Typical Bill….always thinking. NO DEAD AIR!!!!!!! Miss him greatly
Elvis is that You? Bill Gable was remarkable and talented beyond anything I can describe. I found out in Sept 2019 that we lost him in 2018.
