A RAVE FOR SHANNON
To the Editor,
Now that WINS in New York is no longer a music station, we in New York have lost another fine disc jockey in Joel Sebastian. Just recently, Murray the K left New York radio. Because of this lack of good disc jockeys and radio stations in New York, I, and many of my friends have been listening to some fine stations out of town.

I’d like to call to the attention of those who read your fine magazine that there is one very fine disc jockey who is on CKLW in Detroit-Windsor. He is Tom Shannon, formerly of WKBW in Buffalo, and he is on every evening from 6:30-11:30.
He plays a good amount of new records, and he is very well informed about the pop music situation in the world. CKLW is at 800 on the radio dial, and it is a fine station.
I hope many people take note of Tom Shannon, the best DJ in the business. It is too bad that in New York, one station plays only 28 different songs a week, and the other is totally mediocre. Thank God there is a Tom Shannon and CKLW.

Tom Shannon passed away in Salinas, California, on May 26, 2021, while under hospice care for pancreatic cancer. He was 82.

His voice was heard for over four decades on numerous great Detroit radio stations, such as CKLW, WJBK, WXYZ, WCAR, WMJC, WTWR, CKMR, and WCXI. Tom once had said that he did (to paraphrase his exact words), “three ‘tours of duty’ at CKLW. ’60s, ’70s, and in the ’80s.”
He formally began his illustrious radio career as a news person, while in his teens, in Buffalo in 1955. He left Buffalo’s WKBW for CKLW in Windsor in December 1964, replacing Terry Knight.
After 50 years in radio (and television) and having been in multiple radio markets around the country, Tom Shannon retired from broadcasting radio in 2005. Tom’s last DJ stint was on WHTT-FM, Buffalo. He was 67 at the time.
Surrounded by his loving family, Tom Shannon died of pancreatic cancer while in hospice care, Wednesday, May 26, 2021. He was 82.
Tom Shannon is a member of the Buffalo Broadcasting Hall of Fame and Buffalo Music Hall of Fame.

Popular Big 8 Jock Finds Place On Local TV Dance Show

DETROIT — “The Lively Spot,” hosted by CKLW deejay Tom Shannon, bowed here on CKLW-TV (Channel 9) September 30 replacing the Robin Seymour “Swingin’ Time” show.
The show will be seen 3:30-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6-7 p.m. Saturday when it will be known as “The Tom Shannon Show.”
Shannon will continue his popular 6-9 p.m. CKLW-AM show on the radio. Elmer Jaspan, director of programming for CKLW-TV, predicts Shannon will became a great favorite of Detroit young people on local Detroit/Windsor (Canada) television.
Shannon joined CKLW four years ago. A songwriter, he wrote the 1963 hit, “Wild Weekend,” while a jock in Buffalo. He also wrote “Soul Clappin,” a local hit now currently playing Detroit radio. END
