AUGUST 21-27, 1967

_______________

You betcha! Yes, WKNR was serious about their title for this Keener contest the station promoted back in August 1967.

Here’s a snapshot of WKNR music director Paul Cannon holding the little mascot cub in front of the WKNR studios on Michigan Avenue.

Now what school’s name was deemed the winner, that we do not know. (We’ll try to reach out to Paul Cannon for the rest of the story). But here’s picture proof we do have which shows THAT one Keener mascot contest was the real deal! 🙂

STORY UPDATE!

PAUL CANNON

We reached out to Paul Cannon yesterday afternoon (Thurs., Aug 26) and, according to what he shared more into the story, after the name of the winning school was announced, WKNR immediately acquired the lion cub at a pre-selected exotic pet store outlet in the metro Detroit area for its delivery (yes, acquiring such pets in those days for private ownership was not illegal!).

The little cubby, still in the crate, was “not at all too friendly, growling and hissing at us” during its transport to the winning school. The following day, several of the school’s personnel and students returned to the station. With the cub tagging along on a leash. As overly cantankerous the cub was, Paul Cannon, exclaimed, “how did you manage to get a leash around its neck?” Someone replied, “With hockey mitts!” 🙂

Oh, the winning school’s name? It was a Catholic school, according to Paul, located either on 6 Mile or 7 Mile at the time, back in August of 1967. Any recollection as to the school’s precise name is yet to be determined.

A Kodak moment, indeed. Great story. Thank you, Paul Cannon, for sharing the memory!
